what inspires ire (and the antidote)
Published about 2 months ago • 3 min read
hey, baked bean.
you know, there’s nothing more ire-inspiring to me than feeling like i’ve got to fit myself into boxes i was meant to break open
even in that statement, you KNOW conventional wisdom wants me to strike “ire-inspiring” + just say that it angers me, or maybe even that it pisses me the eff off
(you may wish i did, too)
but when something sparks you like “ire-inspiring” did me, the more you try to fight it, the more futile it is + the more exhausted + discouraged you get
and that’s the hidden cost no one ever talks about when it comes to following expert advice + proven formulas at the expense of your own inner wisdom + deep joy
not only will you procrastinate more, losing precious time trying to force something that doesn’t feel right —
but the battle between what everyone else says is the right thing to do + what you know would suit you better will actually put you at an energetic deficit
it’ll have you working slower + possibly sloppier, taking longer to do less, and feeling super freaking bummed about it in the process
the antidote?
trusting yourself at LEAST as much as everyone else, of course ;)
and prioritizing your own joy above pretty much everything else, in decisions you’ve become accustomed to ignoring it in
and embracing the power of personalization in all you do
you’re no cookie, so stop tryna cut yourself like one
you know where i see this a lot?
when folks first start to get clear on branding for their business (and the irony gets me singing alanis in my head every time)
even though it seems pretty obvious that YOUR brand should be personalized to reflect YOU, there’s often a pull to become what you think prospective clients want
as if you’d ever really want clients who aren’t here for what YOU, SPECIFICALLY bring to the table
but there are all these expert voices + strategic guides eager to call YOUR way wrong so you can hop on THEIR wagon instead
and before you know it, you’re left wondering how the hell to brand yourself without putting your own sweet + sexy self in a box

hey, chicken strip. 🚨 stop joining communities to be polite pssst: you can sub “joining communities” with whatever else you’re doing because it would feel rude or uncomfortable not to you work, feel + love too damn hard to slowly smother yourself under the weight of being a “good” friend, colleague, partner or lover it may feel easier to just click “accept” on that group invite than to say it’s not a good fit for you right now same for the new client, volunteer position, date invite or collab...
hey, sesame seed. listen, there will always be some sorta valid bullshit reason to sideline your joy — especially in your business there will always be voices urging you to deprioritize your joy — insisting that it’s impractical, unreasonable + irresponsible to seek joy as a metric of success it’s one thing to SAY you want to claim joy like it’s your job, or to know that you’d like a more joyful experience in this one sweet life of yours that’s the easy part (even though i know you might...
hey, cheese tray. what do you do when there’s a shitton you COULD be doing + you aren’t feeling focused, but you ARE feeling motivated + ready to get down to biz? i regularly use a combination of: whiteboards (3) NUMEROUS google cal reminders (color coded by mood at the moment rather than in pursuit of organizational purposes) — for weekly AND daily goals/tasks sticky notes torn scraps of paper voice memos a journal for strategizing out at cafes or parks dedicated google docs hastily made...
