the price of not wanting to be a bother

hey, spiced syrup.

every tuesday morning, with VERY little exception, i get up for a 7am movement class called “connect + destress” with billie smith

there’s honestly not much else i get up at that time for, and i’ve been doing it for something like a couple years now

the “connect” part is where we share about our weekend, including any wins or complaints we want to share or release

and then we do a movement-based destressing practice that includes stretching, mobility work, visualization, and plenty of cute analogies

(i’m still giggling at last week’s directive to imagine squishing a grape… or the heads of your enemies lol)

billie always provides a range of options based on what might feel best for you in any given moment, and also encourages you to modify at will, as you see fit, according to what your body may be telling you

and you KNOW that’s my JAM!

before we start our movement practice, billie will ask if there are any requests. this is where you can let them know if you’ve got an injury, if your energy is especially high or low, or you’ve got something that would benefit from a little extra care + attention

do you know how LONG it took me to actually RESPOND to this request?

between not wanting to bother billie or skew the session for anyone else attending, and the latent programming to take what one gets + not be so audacious as to ask for special treatment…

it was quite a while before i took advantage of this amazing benefit of working with billie

yesterday morning, i was battling some serious pain in my shoulder

i could barely lift my left arm, and it hurt so much to do even that

which was wild, in my opinion, because it had been hurting to a greater or lesser degree for a week, and just the day before i had taken what i thought was good care with it, actually stretching + rubbing it well

so i brought i up at the start of class, and billie shared so many super helpful insights into what might be going on, as well as suggestions to find relief

(turns out my extra intense stretching may have actually aggravated it more, for several reasons i hadn’t even thought of)

PLUS the movement practice that day was designed in the moment to support the needs of my shoulder, as well as the rest of my body that may have been compensating for it

imagine if i’d kept my mouth shut, not wanting to be a bother

i would have lost out on truly helpful information + a practice that supported my body needs beautifully

but you know who else would have lost out?

billie

because billie LOVES to share the magical way our bodies move + how they try to protect us in so many nuanced ways

not only did my question not BOTHER billie, but they really enjoyed sharing their thoughts (with consent, which you also know i love)

so, what about this…

what if you started TRUSTING the offers people extend?

what if you stopped saying “no, that’s okay,” and “oh, you don’t have to,” or “it’s okay, i’m fine?”

what if you simply said YES, thank you

wow, what a generous offer

i will absolutely take you up on that

i’m leading a workshop with billie next week around saying NO without spiraling (in three simple steps)

and sometimes your way into your NOs is through your more intentional YESes

it’s by choosing some things to STOP saying NO to, that will make space for more easeful, joyful YESes

after my workshop component, billie will lead us through a gentle practice for creating peace + grounding when you find yourself struggling to say + stick to a necessary NO

we’d love for you to say YES to it if you’re ready to stop spiraling every time you tell someone NO

it’s happening next wednesday september 23, from 6-8pm ET

the price of registration is $65 CAD (which works out to $46-47 US)

but, for members of either my inner sanctum community or billie’s rebel movement club, the registration fee is WAIVED!

so you *could* enroll in the rebel movement club for $100 CAD instead + get access to a menu of live classes each week PLUS an on-demand library + more, for just $26-27 US more than the workshop fee

and how about THIS for an offer you’re welcome to accept…

join the rebel movement club before wednesday’s workshop + i’ll send you a special link to join the SANCTUM too, for the no-longer-valid, wayback batshit beta pricing of $47/month, pricelocked for life!

(which means you’ll never pay more than that, even if you leave + come back, you’ll retain that wildly discounted pricing!)

i’m a member of the rebel movement club, and billie is a member of the sanctum. we can both vouch for how great it is to have both spaces in our support squad stack

whether you’re down for all that or just feeling the say NO without spiraling workshop + practice, we cannot wait to see you there
